A giant among wine lovers of the big bold red varieties is the highly regarded Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Sauvignon is actually a naturally occurring blend of the Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc varieties of grapes originating out of the Medoc district in the Bordeaux region of France. One of the five dominant varietals from the area, this grape is small with a black tough skin that is resistant to disease and thrives in the moderately warm semi arid climate with a long growing season. Experts generally regard France and California as the top rated producing areas of this wonderful wine, but excellent examples hale from Italy, the Coonawarra region of Australia, Chile, South Africa, and New Zealand.

While Cabernet Sauvignon wine stands on its own merit, many excellent blends are available as well. This wine is softened and mellows with a blending with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Carmenelli, Syrah/Shiraz, and more recently Sangiovese wines. Many wine enthusiasts find these blends a delightful experience in the big bold red wine arena.

This wonderful wine has the quality to age well over a five to 10 year period and therefore is a favorite of the wine collector. It truly does get better with age and makes an excellent item to keep in your wine collection.
